Open mic

Poetry night at the Gallery café. My favorite! My friend, who owns the café, is celebrating the success of their two years in the city with a whole week of activities geared to artists and writers—totally my thing!
I was invited last night to the artists’ night. It was just a chilled evening, with drinks, music, and people who shared the same passion for art. I met new and old friends. Tonight was open mic. Several poets read stuff—some original, some from the greats, like Shakespeare. Then one guy in the back got up and recited “Humpty Dumpty,” to a big round of applause from an amused audience.
I read a couple poems of mine. I haven’t written poetry in awhile cuz this year has been pretty good. When I have a depressing year, I go on writing sprees, and write up to six a night. But I’ve had so many happy days this year—one of the downsides to everything going fine. Definitely the creative produce is worth the pain, in most cases.
I love this place cuz the kind of people that come here are different—deep, and searching. We talk about life for hours on end, philosophizing into the early hours of the next morning. Tonight we talked a lot about the futility of riches and material wealth. One of my friends was expressing how tormented he was with all the burdens of business deals and money matters weighing on his mind, causing him sleepless nights. There’s a verse in the Bible I showed him that says exactly that, how people who strive for only material things are “pierced through with many acute, mental pangs”.
Anyway, there’ll be activities at the café every night of this week. Tomorrow is stand-up comedy and Karaoke! Fun!
