Pioneer stories, part 1 — Roughing it

Yes, we have been very busy, just as Justin said. I think Vas and I are starting to long for “home sweet home” after being on the road for a few months now.
Ok, to continue with our “travel log.” After saying our goodbyes to part of Vas’ family that we don’t get to see that often (sob), Vas and I headed to Guadalajara. The Family members that live in Guadalajara were so welcoming of us and made us feel at home, inviting us for dinner and letting us stay in their home for the night. After hearing that we were going to be looking for a home in Guad, a friend invited us to stay in her vacation getaway in the mountains surrounding Guadalajara, in a town called Tapalpa. We could stay there and look for housing in the city.
So Vas and I, my sister and the kids, Chris and Liz and their little ones drove up to the place that would be our home for the next 10 days. The house was very cute, country style, but it needed to be cleaned up a bit as it seemed that the house had started slightly sliding and there were big cracks in the wall and a bit of fallen ceiling and wall on the floor. We girls went to work to clean while the guys started a fire in the living room fireplace and made sure the water was turned on etc. It was hard to believe it was the middle of summer as it was pretty cold at that altitude and we were thankful every day for the fire place. The place was a bit rustic and not what we were used to with all the modern conveniences nowadays. There was no hot water and so we would boil water at the end of the day for our showers. We were also without a washing machine and the cost of washing and drying our first two loads of laundry in town was $18.00—at the only Laundromat in town (yep, they had the monopoly) so after that we decided we’d wash our clothes by hand and had the kids use bibs continually and thanked the Lord every day for washing machines. It also made me think of all the people that live like that every day and in much worse conditions and realized how blessed we are.

[…] There’s a bunch of new posts over at Live the Creed that you should go and read. Things were quiet there for awhile because of all that was/is going on with our bloggers in their part of the world, but they’re all back in the saddle and full of stories to share. There’s also a new editorial up by yours truly. Go check it all out when you have the time, and link to the site if you don’t already. Pretty please. […]
