India, part 3

Vas: Ok, so after the camp we took a two hour trip back to Bombay and the bus driver must have had some extra chai that day (I don’t remember how it was spelled, but it’s strong tea, especially if you get it from the bottom of the pot with buffallo milk). He was driving fast. In fact I think it was supposed to take two hours but only took one. I felt like i was surfing in the back of the bus as this gent was flying through the jungle down something between a country road and a path back to Bombay

This was Godfreys’ first time to really see Bombay and my first time to see these parts. We drove through the city straight downtown to a famous train station, on the way taking in the view of extreme poverty, extreme wealth and extreme exoticness and humidity. The busdriver couldn’t drop us off at the train station so he dropped us off in a slum. It was wild. We got surrounded by a group of 9 people who wanted to carry our bags and another six who wanted to steal them while simultaniously sniffing glue. We somehow managed to walk through millions of people and cross a ten lane street jam-packed with cars going in every direction to our rendezvous spot: McDonalds.

While we waited, some of the guys with us had a veggieburger and one of the guys taught Godfrey how to bargain in the Indian market. First rule: it costs a tenth of what they tell you, so for example, if the braclet costs a dollar you can get it for ten cents after a 20 minute barganing session. I think we softened up after the master left us to bargain on our own. Godfrey and myself went the next day to the gateway to India and picked up a couple of gifts for our wives and got a henna tattoo each. Fun times.
