New Year’s at Dubare Elephant camp

Our new years’ was closely followed by a trip to another part of Karnataka, called Coorg. What a brilliant place that was - greenery everywhere and fresh cold air. When you live in a big cosmopolitan city in India, you don’t get to see much of nature and much less breathe fresh clean air……..so you can imagine whatta thrill it was for us to be out and about in Gods beautiful creation. Ahh.
We were invited by one of our friends to a resort up there for two days, which is about 5 hours from Bangalore. It was our hearts desire to spend some time with our daughter Kaila, as during Christmas we really hardly were able to spend much time with her. My sister who is 6 years old came along as well.
Check out these pics that we took at the Dubare Elephant camp. We took a motor boat out there early in the morning and crossed the Kaveri river. We sat around waiting at the edge of the jungle for the elephants. They have a little hut where they make food for them, which is supposed to be a supplement since they are in the jungle most of the night eating as well. They come out early in the morning with wood for the fire that cooks their food… As they came out I just felt like I had stepped into a ‘National Geographic’ scene. The misty morning air and the elephants emerging from the jungle was quite a combination for me. The kids enjoyed it a lot as you can imagine. I got to bathe some of the elephants. They walked them down to the river and then they just flop onto their sides and wait for the mahout ( the man that cares for that elephant) to splash them with water. They were like such little kids and loved all the attention and affection. I was a little worried when someone wanted me to stand in-between two elephants (who seemed to be getting cozy with each other) and pose for a pic…..and hug the elephants trunk. Yikes. But, I got used to it and had a blast as you can see.
